Residential vs. Non-Residential waste in Manitoba, 2020

In 2020, 325,486 tonnes of waste (25.8%) was generated by residential sources in Manitoba, while 608,951 tonnes of waste (74.2%) was generated by non-residential sources. In total, 934,437 tonnes of municipal solid waste was generated in Manitoba 2020 (Statistics Canada, 2024).

Residential waste in Manitoba has overall decreased by 30.5 % from 444,227 tonnes in 2012 to 308,517 tonnes in 2016. Then, it slightly increased by 8.2 % to 333,742 tonnes in 2018 before it declined again by 5.6 % to 314,970 tonnes in 2022 (Statistics Canada, 2024). 

Non-residential waste has generally decreased in Manitoba, by 15.2 %  between 573,436 tonnes in 2012 and 660,772 tonnes in 2016. Since then, it has further decreased by 11.6 % to 584,312 tonnes in 2022.

Waste per capita in Manitoba, 2012-2022

With a population of 1,381,809 the waste per capita of residential waste in Manitoba was 0.23 tonnes in 2022. The waste per capita decreased by 31.3 % from 0.32 in 2012 to 0.22 in 2016. Then, it increased by 9.1 % to 0.24 in 2018 and then it decreased by 4.2 % to 0.23 in 2022.

For non-residential waste, the waste per capita in Manitoba was 0.43 tonnes. It increased by 17.1 % from 0.41 in 2012 to 0.48 in 2014. It remained relatively stable at 0.48 in 2016, then it generally decreased by 10.4 % to 0.43 in 2022 (Statistics Canada, 2024).

For residential waste in Manitoba, 34,118 tonnes were paper fibers (40.5%), 33,410 tonnes were organic waste (39.7%), 5,370 tonnes were plastic waste (6.4%), 2,726 tonnes were mixed metals (3.2%), and 4,515 tonnes were other forms of waste (10.3%) (Statistics Canada, 2024).

For non-residential waste in Manitoba, 48,703 tonnes were paper fibers (50.3%), 25,448 tonnes were organic waste (26.3%), 12,881 tonnes were other organic waste (13.3%), and 9,883 tonnes were other forms of waste (10.2%) (Statistics Canada, 2024). 

Solid waste assets in Manitoba, 2022

In Manitoba, there are 450 solid waste assets. Specifically, there are 124 transfer stations assets (27.6%), 101 active dump sites (22.4%), 92 closed sites (inactive engineered landfills and dumps) (20.4%), 59 active engineered landfills (13.1%), 37 materials recovery facilities (8.2%), 32 composting facilities (7.1%), and 5 other solid waste assets (1.1%) (Statistics Canada, 2022).
